It plays fine in VLC, Movie Player, and SMPlayer.
Unfortunately my Samsung plasma television will play divx, mpeg-3, avi, and some others, but not mpeg-4 (according to tech support).
I never was able to get my laptop connected via HDMI in Mint (video works but no audio) so I'm using a usb drive plugged into the back of the set which has worked really well, until I ran into this MPEG-4. Why samsung does not support/play this format is strange, but that's that.
I have installed, via package manager, winff, transmageddon, avidemux, and arista, attempting each time to convert the file.
I could not get arista to do anything at all. It just stalled after entering information, gave me an 'idle' progress bar, and then five minutes later an error saying it was not responding. I tried three times.
Transmageddon gave me a conversion estimation time of 90 minutes, then 120 minutes, then 135, and was climbing onward when I just decided to quit it.
Winff just just opened a control/command window with about 200 lines of geek ending in a 'press enter' command which closed the window and brought me right back to the beginning having done nothing.
Avidemux looked the most promising, but was the most difficult to understand. After some experimentation I thought I'd converted it properly into an avi file, the file ended up in a folder on the desktop and said that it was .avi. But the television would not recognize it. And when I tried to open it with 'movie player', VLC, or Divx players none would recognize it either. Each said it was not a valid file.
VLC player shows a menu option for file conversion but clicking on it after selecting/opening the file I want to convert seems to do nothing at all. No progress bar, no further options.... just nothing.
Isn't there a SIMPLE method of converting that file? Would anyone be so kind as to give me a little step by step with avidemux since that seemed to be the only promising one?
